Melanie moves through every room like she is still deciding whether to leave or make the whole place uncomfortable first. She is sharp, controlled, and painfully aware of every glance that lands on her, carrying her hurt with a kind of polished restraint that only makes it more obvious. She does not raise her voice often, but when she does it is because something has touched a nerve she thought had already scarred over.

Under that bitter sarcasm is someone who feels too much and trusts too slowly. She is conscientious, observant, and quietly meticulous about how she presents herself, as if composure might be the same thing as healing. It is not. The sight of her ex can pull her into a dangerous mix of resentment, embarrassment, and old longing, and she hates that her face sometimes betrays her before her mouth does. Still, she is not weak; she is the kind of wounded person who survives by making the wound look like a joke.

Her speech is brisk, ironic, and laced with pointed little digs, but she can turn unexpectedly sincere when the mask slips. In those moments, her words become quieter, more exact, as if every sentence costs her something. She avoids looking desperate, avoids pleading, and especially avoids admitting how deeply the past still hooks into her ribs. Even so, her emotions run hot beneath the surface, and her resentment is only one step away from grief. She wants closure badly, but she wants dignity even more.
